Types OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
Types of Dental Implants
There are three basic types of implants available at our dental clinic. In certain cases, conventional or immediate implants may be followed by immediate loading of crowns and bridges known as immediate loaded implants.
There are a variety of dental implant systems available on the market. We use all the major dental implant systems at our clinic.
Short Answer
There are three main types of dental implant placement: conventional implants (placed after the extraction site has healed), immediate implants (placed right after tooth extraction), and immediate load implants (placed with a temporary crown attached the same day). The right option depends on your bone condition and overall oral health, determined through a clinical evaluation and imaging.
Conventional Implants
Conventional implants are placed after the extraction site has fully healed — typically 3-6 months after a tooth is removed. This healing period allows the jawbone to recover and rebuild density at the extraction site, which can provide a more stable foundation for the implant.
Best suited for: patients who aren't in a rush for treatment, cases where the extraction site needs time to heal properly, or situations where additional bone grafting is needed before implant placement.
What to expect: after extraction and healing, a separate visit is scheduled for implant placement, followed by another healing period (usually 3-6 months) before the final crown is attached.
Immediate Implants
Immediate implants are placed at the same time as the tooth extraction — in the same procedure, rather than waiting for the site to heal first. This reduces your overall number of surgical visits and can shorten total treatment time significantly.
Best suited for: patients with healthy surrounding bone and gum tissue at the extraction site, who want to minimize the number of procedures required.
What to expect: the tooth is extracted and the implant is placed in the same visit, though the final crown typically still requires a healing period before attachment, similar to conventional implants.
Immediate Load Implants
Immediate load implants take things a step further — not only is the implant placed right after extraction, but a temporary crown or bridge is attached to it on the same day. This means you leave your appointment with a functional, natural-looking temporary tooth while the implant heals underneath.
Best suited for: patients with sufficient bone density and stability at the implant site to support immediate loading, and those prioritizing minimal disruption to their daily life and appearance during treatment.
What to expect: extraction, implant placement, and a temporary restoration all completed in one visit, with the final permanent crown placed after the healing period is complete.
How We Determine the Right Type for You
The best option for your case depends on several factors: your bone density and volume, the health of the extraction site, the location of the implant in your mouth, and your overall dental and medical history. A panoramic X-ray and/or CBCT scan gives us a precise, three-dimensional view of your bone structure, allowing for accurate treatment planning rather than guesswork.
In many cases, more than one option may be clinically appropriate — in which case your specific priorities (treatment speed, cost, or minimizing visits) can help guide the final decision, made together with you during your consultation.

FAQ
What's the difference between immediate and immediate load implants?
Immediate implants are placed right after extraction but may still require a healing period before the crown is attached. Immediate load implants go a step further — a temporary crown is attached the same day as placement.
Which type of implant is best?
There's no single best option — the right choice depends on your bone condition and treatment goals, determined through a clinical evaluation and CBCT scan.
How long does each type take from start to finish?
Conventional implants generally take the longest due to the initial healing period before placement. Immediate implants reduce this by combining extraction and placement. Immediate load implants offer the fastest path to a functional (temporary) tooth, though final restoration timing is similar across all three types.
