Crowns & Bridges

We offer the following types of dental crowns and bridges at our clinic:

Metal Crowns

What is a dental crown?

As we get older, many of us discover that our teeth that are no longer as structurally sound as they were in our youth. Your regular dentist will usually be able to recognize problem areas which may lead to tooth damage and a need for dental crowns.

Grinding your teeth, an improper bite, age, fillings and tooth decay are all contributing factors in the erosion, cracking or breakage of your teeth. If the entire surface of the tooth is damaged, but the root system has remained intact, your dentist will usually suggest that a dental crown be put in place.

Dental crowns are also capable of replacing missing teeth entirely. The dental crown is secured to the teeth on either side using a bridge section which connects the two dental crowns. Alternatively, single tooth dental implants can be placed. This eliminates the need for supporting the dental crowns so no bridge is required.

So, we may recommend the placement of a dental crown for a wide range of problems but, in general, the majority of these reasons usually fall within one of the following basic categories:

  • The restoration of a tooth to its original shape.

  • The strengthening of a weak tooth.

  • To improve the esthetic appearance of a tooth.

Metal-Free Crowns ( Procera, CERCON, IPS, LAVA, ZIRCON)

Porcelain Crowns and Biologic Compatibility (Dental Allergies)

All Porcelain crowns as Procera crowns are the most biologically compatible crowns available today. Some of the latest research ranks all porcelain dental crowns as 99% biologically compatible, which means they have fewer allergy problems. Because very few patients have allergies to gold or to porcelain, many dental offices offer inexpensive dental crowns that have non-precious metals inside them that contribute to allergic reactions.

Metal Free

Procera - All Ceramic Crowns

We offer new machined / hand-laid porcelain technology that is

now available for front teeth is now the first metal-free crown

technique that is truly strong enough to be universally recommend

for the replacement of crowns or large silver fillings for your back teeth.

This new system, called "Procera", gives you the strength of the

traditionalgold / porcelain crown (which is how over 95% of

all crowns are currently made), while providing the beauty and

translucency of porcelain. As with front tooth crowns, the metallic,

grayish metal underpinning found in most of today's crowns is

replaced by an aero-space porcelain foundation. You've probably

seen that unsightly "gray line at the gum" on existing crowns

(for yourselfor other people) that can be caused by the

current mainstream metallic-based technique.

We now have the solution - PROCERA AllCeram. PROCERA AllCeram is a coping made of extremely densesintered aluminum oxide. The coping is produced in an industrial process known as PROCERA method, which ensures optimal fit, great strength, non-porosity and has the ability to transmit light without being transparent.

The secret behind Procera All Ceram is its unique combination of strength and beauty. Over the last few years, new technology has made dental porcelain more practical. Until now, porcelain coated ceramic copings has been neither strong enough nor durable enough for widespread use. Procera All Ceram is translucent giving the tooth a natural appearance. At the same time Procera All Ceram is excellent for concealing underlying surfaces, such as amalgam and root fillings. This ceram is also customized but still industrially produced, ensuring predictable results. You should try quickly in your mouth with minimal adjustments.

Due to the strength in the core material, PROCERA AllCeram can be recommended for prosthetic reconstructions anywhere in the mouth. More and more patients are asking for constructions made of material not containing metal or other alloys. PROCERA AllCeram is made of bio-compatible material (comparable to Titanium) which minimizes the risk of allergic reactions.

The translucent coping offers remarkable esthetic characteristics. When combined with PROCERA AllCeram Porcelain these characteristics are put to their very best advantage. In order to recreate the beauty of natural teeth, the porcelain has been formulated to make the most of the coping's inherent potential.

The Procera Abutment is created by CADD design using the Procera technique. The scanner is used to create a custom milled implant abutment that is designed by the dentist and the laboratory for a specific patient's needs. The data is then transferred by modem to the production plant in Sweden and the custom Procera Abutment is machined.

Strength no longer has to be compromised to achieve extreme

esthetics.Zirconia is like a much awaited CHANGE over traditional

P.F.M in the present dental world.

Zirconia combines the esthetics of our patients demand with the

strength and affordable prices they desire.

Laboratory tests have shown the fracture toughness and flexural strength

of zirconia is significantly higher than that of alumina or any other all

ceramic. Excellent strength and versatility can be achieved.

Procera Zirconia, made of Yttria Stabilized Zirconium (YZ) has substantial

advantages compared to other dental materials: mechanical resistance,

biocompatibility and a fracture toughness two times greater than Alumina.

Conventional precious metal ceramics restorations are at 800 MPa or less. Metal ceramics cannot compete with the esthetics of Procera Zirconia. It is capable of being placed anywhere in the mouth and can accommodate 3-4 unit bridges

Procera Zirconia restorations can be inserted using conventional cementing techniques. Bonding is not required.

Benefits of Procera Zirconia

  • Uncompromised beauty

  • Upto 3 to 16 units bridge

  • Any number of pontics

  • Available in all shades

  • Outstanding compatibility

  • Conventional cementation like PFM's.

Procera® (Alumina) is composed of a densely sintered high-purity aluminum oxide coping that is manufactured using CAD/CAM technology. The core has the ability to transmit light without being transparent. The secret behind Procera® is its unique combination of strength and beauty.

Extremely low fracture rates have been reported and the restorations serve for many years.

More and more patients are asking for restorations made of material not containing metal or other alloys. Procera® is made of a bio-compatible material (comparable to Titanium) which minimized the risk of allergic reactions.

Alumina
Zirconia

These are full ceramic crowns and bridges without metal reinforcement. Zircon (synthetic diamond) has exceptional rigidity. This enables us to carry out great restorations with improved mechanical forecast. Zircon is very high melting point ensures perfect stability during the heat treatment of the various ceramic layers. By utilizing Zircon, the crown or bridge will adjust perfectly. Not utilizing metal reinforcement (which the dental technician must usually mask by an opaque ceramic layer) makes it possible to produce crowns with low thickness, thus saving healthy tissue during preparation of teeth. Finally, due to this technique, the aesthetic results are excellent because the light is no longer interrupted by subjacent metal, therefore it can cross the crown and restore the natural appearance to the tooth.

Zircon Crowns

A LAVA Crown is one of the strongest all ceramic crowns available

in the world. LAVA crowns are reported to have three times more

tensile strength than any other style of all ceramic crown.

LAVA is an inert and biocompatible ceramic, and is the name trademarked

by the 3M ESPE Company, for yttrium zirconia. Yttrium zirconia is strong

enough to be used as a heat shield on the Space Shuttle. The subcoping

and internal aspect of a LAVA crown is made with this material, which is

manufactured by 3M ESPE. The disadvantage of LAVA is that it is

monochromatic (it only comes in one color), and it is not very esthetic, by

itself. LAVA resembles mother-of-pearl, visually, in it's natural state.

To make the external part of your dental crown perfectly esthetic and functional, a layer of quality dental porcelain is fused to the external aspect of your LAVA crown. This adds some translucency, vibrancy, proper shade and color, and gives your new tooth a comfortable texture.

The 3M™ ESPE™ Lava™ Crowns and Bridges system is an innovative CAD/CAM technology using a zirconium oxide base. The esthetics of Lava restorations represent the optimum in all-ceramic systems. Preparations require removal of less tooth structure, and cementation can be accomplished using proven, conventional techniques. Colorable frameworks that are thin and translucent ensure a natural and vital appearance. Lava crowns and bridges provide some of the most durable and esthetic all-ceramic restorations available today. The Zirkonia frameworks are biocompatible and exhibit the highest strength available in all-ceramic restorations.

LAVA is also an excellent dental material for dental implant abutments.

Lava™ crowns and bridges offer the highest strength restorations to the dental industry.

Cercon crowns are the most modern of crowns and have no metal part. These crowns have a slim and tooth coloured zirconium base that replaces the metal base. The normal porcelain is built on the zirconium base. This means that it is a full porcelain crown but it is much stronger than the normal full porcelain jacket crown. Cercon is especially suitable for creating long bridges.

Cergogold restorations not only look like natural teeth, but they also perform like them! The Cergogold system exhibits smooth surfaces and hardness values resembling those of natural teeth. This type of surface has been proven to abrade the antagonists at a natural rate. As with the Golden Gate alloy range, Cergogold can also be veneered with Duceragold porcelain. Matching the shades of all-ceramic and metal-ceramic restorations in the same patient's mouth is no longer a problem.

  • 20% softer than competing systems

  • Fracture and shear resistance better than any other pressable ceramic

  • The highest performing low wear restoration when overlaid with hydrothermal porcelain

  • Light Dynamic results, no adverse effects under various lighting conditions!

Gold crowns are often the preferred choice when the patient is not overly concerned about their appearance. Gold is extremely pliable making gold crowns a better fit than any other type. The strength and durability of the gold offers a more solid crown that will not chip or crack, which is possible with other types of crown. Gold crowns are normally used in molars, where the forces from chewing and grinding are most prevalent.

Gold Dental Crowns

Advantages of gold crowns :

  • It is easier to prepare a tooth for a gold crown as there is minimal tooth structure removal and more of the original tooth remains intact.

  • Gold is less likely to cause wear on opposing teeth.

  • Gold is more pliable and offers a better fit.

  • Of all the crowns gold offers the healthiest environment for the gum tissue.

Gold

Porcelain fused to metal crowns offer a natural appearance with a better fit than a standard porcelain crown. On the down side they have a metal substructure making it difficult to replicate the translucency of natural teeth. It is possible that a darker line will appear at the edge of the crown, near the gum, as it recedes with age.

Advantages of porcelain and metal crowns:

  • Porcelain fused-to-metal crowns offer a very natural look.

  • They fit to the tooth very well.

  • Disadvantages of porcelain and metal crowns:

  • They have a metal substructure and require an opaque below the porcelain.

  • In time, a darker line may be visible at the edge of the crown.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is one method to fill a gap created by a missing tooth (or teeth). Dental bridge or pontic is a custom-made false tooth or teeth, that is permanently placed between two healthy teeth, filling in the area left by a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is held in place by crowns placed on the healthy teeth on each side of space to be filled.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Restores your smile

  • Restores your ability to properly chew and speak

  • Maintains the shape of your face

  • Distributes the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth

  • Prevents remaining teeth from drifting out of position

  • Helps preserve the natural function and position of the teeth

  • Restores and maintains natural bite

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge.

Traditional bridges

Cantilever bridges are usually used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.

Cantilever bridges

Marlyland bridges also called a resin-bonded bridges or a Maryland bonded bridges. Maryland bridges supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the back of existing teeth.

Maryland bridges

Types of Dental Bridge Materials

  1. Porcelain fused to metal dental bridges

  2. All porcelain dental bridges

  3. All metal dental bridges (Gold)

There are three basic types of materials for dental bridges:

The all porcelain dental bridges and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) dental bridges are tooth colored bridges. PFM dental bridges are usually used to restore back teeth where the forces of chewing and grinding are strongest. All porcelain dental bridges are the most aesthetic and are used almost exclusively for front teeth where the need for strength is not as critical. Gold dental bridges are the most durable and offer the most precise fit. Gold dental bridges does not chip.

The porcelain bridges used at Dental Tourism India International Dental Center include the IPS Empress Esthetics crowns from Ivoclar Vivadent and Procera NobelEsthetics from Nobel Biocare.

Procedure for Dental Bridges Treatment

The course of treatment described here is for traditional bridges, one of several options available at our dental clinic. Consult your dentist to find out what the best solution is for you, given your specific condition.

  • Local anesthesia is first adminstered at the region of bridge tooth preparation

  • The natural teeth adjacent to the missing gap is reshaped to receive the dental bridge

  • Records are taken and approved with the patient to determine the color, bite, length and shape of the bridge

  • An impression is taken for a replica model of the teeth

  • This model is sent to a lab where the individualized bridge is fabricated

  • A temporary bridge is placed on whilst the permanent bridge is made

  1. First evaluation and bridge tooth preparation

  • The temporary bridge is removed

  • The permanent bridge is fitted and cemented into place on the teeth

  • A quality assurance check is done for any re-adjustments or re-works of the dental bridge

2. Fitting of bridge on delivery

  • Brush and floss the bridge as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist

3. Care of bridge

Recovery Expectations

Both the preparation and placement of the temporary bridge as well as the bonding of the permanent bridge may cause some minor tenderness in the area. Some individuals may experience sensitivity in teeth. This sensitivity will disappear gradually over a few days to weeks.

Replacing missing teeth should actually make eating easier but until you become accustomed to the bridge, eat soft foods that have been cut into small pieces.

Postcare Instructions for Dental Bridges

It is important to keep your remaining teeth healthy and strong as the success of the bridge. The bridge depends on the solid foundation offered by the surrounding teeth.

  1. Avoid chewing on or eating hard foods on the restorations for 24 hours from the time they were cemented

  2. To help with discomfort or swelling rinse your mouth 3xd with warm salt water. (1tsp. of salt in 8oz of water)

  3. Keep crown area clean to maintain tissue compatibility (the contour of the prosthesis must allow the surrounding tissue to conform to a natural, healthy position)

  4. Some sensitivity in teeth may be experienced by certain patients. This sensitivity will disappear gradually over a few days to weeks. If teeth are sensitive :

  • Avoid hot, cold or acidic food and beverages

  • Pain medication be taken as directed as long as there is no medical contradiction based upon your medical history

  • Use flouride rinse and toothpaste for sensivity teeth

  • Clean teeth properly

Care for Dental Bridges

Dental bridges require the same regular and consistent home and professional dental care, as your natural teeth to prevent decay at the tooth-dental crown junction. To provide optimum longevity for your restorations, please follow the home care tips below:

  1. Brush after eating and before bedtime around the bridge with a soft toothbrush, especially where the bridge meets the gum line. At the gum line harmful bacteria can be harbored to cause decay and gum disease.

  2. Floss at least once to twice a day. Use the proxy brush or floss threader to remove plaque under and around these areas to maintain good oral hygiene. Buildup of food debris and plaque on your teeth and gums can become infected.

  3. Rinse with fluoride rinse before bed. Swish the fluoride rinse vigorously in your mouth for at least one minute. Do not swallow any of the rinse and do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes

  4. Be careful about chewing toffees, gum, grainy rolls and tough food in this area

  5. See your dentist for regular professional check-ups and cleanings
