WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERIODONTICS AND ORAL HEALTH

PERIODONTICS AND ORAL HEALTH

Who is a periodontist??

A dentist who studies periodontics has comprehensive training in diagnosing, treating and preventing gum disease.

They can also treat the problems involving ligaments and bone that support your teeth.

WHAT ARE THE ORAL CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE TREATED WITH PERIODONTICS

1️⃣ GINGIVITIS

This is the initial stage of periodontal disease. Early signs are inflammation and redness in gums around teeth. Bleeding on probing is also a sign of gingivitis.

Now, this is reversible by scaling and root planning if diagnosed at an early stage.

2️⃣ PERIODONTAL DISEASE

This is the advanced stage. Clinical features include pocket formation, bone loss, loss of epithelial attachment. Teeth may become sensitive with a foul taste in mouth. Increase mobility of teeth is also seen due to bone loss.

This if diagnosed in time can stop the progression of disease.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERIODONTAL PROCEDURES??

1️⃣ DENTAL CROWN LENGTHENING

This involves removal of gum tissue in order to expose the crown margins for either cosmetic or restorative reasons. This treatment involves reshaping the gums and bones to expose more of the tooth.

2️⃣ GUM GRAFTING

A gum grafting procedure involves attaching tissue grafted from the roof of the mouth or a donor source. The exposed root is protected to prevent bone loss and further recession.

HOW PERIODONTICS CAN IMPROVE ORAL HEALTH?

SCALING AND ROOT PLANING

In early stages a deep cleaning procedure called scaling removes plaque and toxins. Root planing is the process of smoothing the tooth root to remove plaque and tartar.

PERIODONTAL POCKET PROCEDURES

This involves curettage and deep invasion of the pocket lining to remove subgingival deposits and plaque.

REGENERATIVE PROCEDURES

This involves grafting bone or using tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage the body to regenerate tissue and bone. This procedure is done when sufficient boner loss has occurred due to periodontal disease progression.

Visit your dentist today if you feel your gums are lose or they bleed while you brush or you have a bad smell from mouth or you feel that your teeth have become lose or they are showing gaps or spaces that were not there earlier.
