hill station is a high altitude town that was once used by European colonialists
as a place of refuge from summer heat. These hill stations are usually found
in Southeast Asia and South Asian countries especially in India and Pakistan.
After Indian Independence the role of the hill stations as summer capitals
ended but many hill stations are popular tourist resorts. The Hill Resorts
today appear to be the most intoxicating travel destinations. At the hill

Some of the famous Hill Stations of India are Conoor, Dalhousie, Darjreeling, Dehradun, Ganggtok, Gulmarg, Itanagar., Kullu, Leh, Ladakh, Mahabaleshwar, Mirik, Srinagar, Mussorrie, Nianital, Ooty, Panchmarhi, Ranikhet, Shillong, Shimla, Sonamarg, Khandala, Kodaikanal, Manali, Mount Abu and Munnar. Coonor is an enchanting hill station located in the Nilgiri hills about 19km from Ooty. It is the second largest hill station in the Niligri hills. Coorg is a famous hill station thronged by multitude of tourists. The place is famous for its orange and coffee plantations. It is the birth place of the most famous river Cauvery (Karnataka). Chail is the hill station of Himachal Pradesh. It was the summer capital of Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, when he was banished by the British Raj. to escape the summer heat. Darjeeling is renowned for its natural beauty,
clean fresh air, and pleasant weather all the year round. Darjeeling is
blessed with many tea estates. Darjeeling tea is regarded as the best among
all the black teas. Dharamsala is a hill station located in Himachal Pradesh, India. The place abounds in natural beauty. The spurs of the Hiamalayas, the dark pine covered mountains reaching out towards the upper peaks that soar into the regions of eternal snow fascinates us. The snowline of this place is perhaps more easily accessible than at any other hill resort. The glittering rays of the sun fall upon the glossy snow and cast their reflections back in the valley in all the seven colors of the rainbow. This is truly a heavenly sight that arouses all our senses. The mountains surround the three sides of the town and the valley stretches beyond to the south. Now the place is the seat of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, after the Chinese conquest of His country. Khandala, located on the Western slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range is a beautiful hill station in Maharashtra. It is near to Lonavala. The deep valley on one side and high hills on other side divides Khandala and Lonavala. Whenever a tourist visits Lonavala he also visits Khandala. Mahabalehwar
lies in the curvaceous mountain ranges of the western ghats of Maharashtra.
It overlooks the Krishna and Koyna valleys. Mahabaleshwar along with Panchgani
makes the most popular hill resorts in the Maharashtra state of India. The
natural beauty of Mahabaleshwar attracts one and everyone. The hill resort
is the perfect place to visit to beat off the summer heat. Mahabaleshwar
is filled with greenery and cool breezes. The hill resort derives its name
from the God "Mahabali". There is a temple dedicated to Lord Mahabali namely
the old Mahabaleshwar Temple. Srinagar, the pride of Kashmir valley is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located in the Kashmir valley. River Jhelum passes through Srinagar city. The climate of this hill station is alpine. The place is renowned for its lakes and the charming rows of houseboats floating on them. Ooty or Udhagamandalam,
is nestled in the enchanting green hills of the Nilgris. Ooty is one of
the favorite summer resorts of the people of South India. Ooty as a hill
station was founded by the British in the early part of the 19th century.
The British people were in love with this hill station, which had in itself
some of the traits of England. Lord Lytton, the then Viceroy of India described
about Ooty to his wife thus, "…such beautiful English rain, such delicious
English mud". The British influence is visible in Ooty in the hand rolled
cigars, chocolate and cheese. Ooty is a hill station that is enveloped in
mist. Panchmarhi is the serene hill station of Madhya Pradesh. This hill station is known as the verdant jewel of the hills. The place is filled with rugged hills, forests and ravines. One of the main attractions of the place is the red sandstone scarp color of the sky at dusk. It appears in various shades of purple and violet. Ranikhet is a famous hill station situated in the northern part of the state of Uttaranchal, in North India. The meaning of the word Ranikhet means Queen`s Field. It is said that the Queen loved this place and while spending some time here gave this name to the city. During those days Ranikhet was the name of a British cantonment. The place is attractive with its salubrious climate and pleasant breeze. The snow-capped mountains add to the natural beauty of the place. The hills of Ranikhet offer a panoramic view of the mighty Himalayan peaks. Ranikhet is a cantonment town known for its ancient temples. Kalimpong is located in the northern part of West Bengal. It is set among the foothills of the Himalayas. The presence of the monasteries and churches adds to the natural beauty of this hill station. Kalimpong offers panoramic view of the great Himalayan ranges that lie beyond.
Kodaikanal is situated on the southern tip of the upper Palani Hills
(Western Ghats), Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal is referred to as the "Princess
of Hill stations" and is a popular tourist destination. It is also referred
to as Kodai hill station. The tourists are seen thronging to Kodaikanal.
The two places visited by the tourists here are the Suicide point and pillar
rock. Other places of tourist attraction are the Silvers falls ,Kodai Television
tower, guna cave. The Breathing Mountains of Kodaikanal are really attractive
to be seen. The way the mist arrises from the mountains makes us feel that
the mountain is breathing. The Kurunchi Andavar Temple of Koddaikanal is
famous for its kurunchi flower which blossoms once in every 12 years. Kodaikanal
is one of the beautiful hill stations that mesmerises us with her beauty.
Kotagiri, the oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris is claimed to be one of the best hill stations in the World. This hill resort is located in the Nilgiri Hills. Kotagiri used to be the summer resort of the British. The beauty of the hill station attracts tourists from far and wide. Unlike Ooty and Coonoor, Kotagiri is situated in an `open-terrace` massif. Lonavala, the jewel of the Sahyadri Mountains is located in the western part of Maharashtra. This hill station also serves as a starting point for tourists interested in visiting the famous, ancient Buddhist rock cut caves of Bhaja and Karla, which are located near this hill station. Manali
is situated in the central parts of Himachal Pradesh. It is spread along
the banks of River Beas. Even the temples of Manali are treated as pilgrimage
centers by the tourists. The temples are open to everyone irrespective of
caste or creed. The cool atmosphere of Manali makes it a heavenly tourist
place. Mirik, the youngest hill station of India is situated in West Bengal. The wild flowers, lovely lake and flourishing forests of Cryptomaria Japanica trees make Mirik appear as a tropical paradise. In the middle of the lovely lake there is a floating fountain that enthralls everyone. Mirik is a relatively new tourist destination, which emerged only in the 1970`s. Mount Abu, the picturesque hill-station is situated in the Aravali ranges of Rajasthan. It is a green oasis in the barren desert of Rajasthan. This hill station is also a pilgrimage center. According to the legends, Abu stands for the son of Himalayan, deriving its name from Arbuada, the powerful serpent that rescued Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, from an abyss. Munnar is a popular hill station located at Kerala and it also borders the state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated at the meeting point of three mountain streams, namely Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Nature has blessed this place with lush green surroundings, lakes, reservoirs, forests and acres of tea estates. The low-lying clouds and mist filled mountains makes it a heaven for tourists. This hill station was opened up from virgin forests a century ago. Mussoorie,
the charming hill station is situated in the Garhwal hills. It is one of
the beautiful hill stations of India. It is said that in 1820, Captain young
of the British Army, influenced by the beauty of Mussoorie built his residence
here. The name, Mussoorie is derived from plants of `Mussoorie` that were
found in abundance here. Now this hill station is not only a tourist center
but also centers of education, business and beauty. Major Hindu pilgrimage
centers like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh
are near to Mussoorie. Nainital
is a popular hill station. The place is described as the Lake District.
It is a popular tourist destination in Uttar Pradesh. It is nestled in the
Kumaon hills of Uttar Pradesh. Nainital is a land that echoes with legends
and stories. The Naini Lake adds to the beauty of the place. The people
here believe that the eyes of Sati were dropped in the Naini Lake while
her body was being carried by Lord Shiva to Kailesh Parvat. Hence, the lake
was given the name Naini Lake. Later the spot became famous by this very
name. Panchgani is the quintessential hill station located only 16 kms from Mahabaleshwar. Situated in the Western Ghats Panchgani is close to important cities like Mumbai and Pune. It is said that the air here is rich in oxygen content and water is said to contain traces of hemoglobin boosting iron. A key geographical feature of this place is the table-topped plateau. Panchgani is known as the `Mecca of Maharashtra`. Saptura is the best-known hill station. The word Saptura literally means the abode of serpents. The resort offers a panoramic view of lush green Dang forest. The station offers breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset. The town has an image of a serpent on the banks of the river Sarpganga. The adivasis and tribals worship this image. Shimla,
which was the summer capital of British India, is situated in Himachal Pradesh.
It is surrounded by pine, cedar, oak and rhododendron forests. This adds
to the natural beauty of the place. In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer
capital of India. After the independence of India, Shimla became the capital
of Punjab. Today it is one of the favorite hill stations that is thronged
by tourists. |
